Biological controls are not always kept in stock, they are ordered in fresh. This can sometimes lead to a time lag between when you place the order and when it is despatched.
The adult fungus gnats/sciarid flies live on and around the compost surface of pots, more commonly indoors rather than outside. The flies themselves are an unsightly nuisance but most of the damage is caused actually by their young. The small white larvae live in the compost and feed on the tender roots of plants and cuttings. They will also come to the surface to feed.
Nematodes are more effective if the sciarid population is high. The nematodes are watered on, and attack the sciarid larvae underground. Parasitic nematodes seek out suitable hosts by swimming in the thin film of water on soil particles, locating hosts by detecting carbon dioxide and other waste products. Once they find a host, they enter the body cavity through the breathing or feeding systems, and release bacteria (Xenorhabdus). The bacteria kills the host within hours, and the nematodes grow and reproduce within the 'broth', which they produce. The next generation of infective juveniles leaves the dead host, and moves in search of fresh hosts.

Combine with yellow sticky traps for better control. A second treatment may be required depending on the level of infestation and the life cycle stage of the pest.

"I have almost 100 plants. So of course I had fungus gnats. I’d tried those stupid sticky things but they just got stuck to the cat’s fur. I got two lots and one did all my plants for the first treatment and the second done a couple of weeks later just to be sure. Tbh I think it got them all the first time. Brilliant product. Only issue was my daughter was a bit sad we suddenly didn’t have actual toads sent to us to do it. Really pleased with them."
"Like everyone I have had scuffling odd fly or two which I had gone to war with iso sb and other stuff. Have used the nematodes and that’s been the end of thrips after a couple of weeks I have seen non. I have started with the subscription as I believe prevention is better than cure. "We had a serious infestation of fungus knat on our indoor plants in the conservatory which had spead around the house. We had tried various gravel solutions and several numerous sticky traps in each plant pot, in all the pots (which always got filled up very quickly). I'd heard of nematode treatment before but never really liked the idea of them, but in desperation ordered the treatment from the Ladybird Plant Care company, the package came very quickly and a personal email from the company with additional advice. The treatment was easy to use and to my surprise, the next day there was absolutely no sign of the flies anywhere - we were very surprised as we expected it to take a few days to have any effect! A few flies started to reappear about 10 days later, and fearing a repeat of the infestation we ordered another pack! All is now well. We have had the odd one or two and still use the yellow sticky traps just in case, but the flies are few and far between. It's such a relief. And now we know that if they ever come back, we will reuse this product. Overall we are extremely pleased with this product and the service."
