The adult sciarid flies live on and around the compost surface of pots, more commonly indoors rather than outside. The flies themselves are an unsightly nuisance but most of the damage is caused actually by their young. The small white larvae live in the compost and feed on the tender roots of plants and cuttings. They will also come to the surface to feed.
You need to control both the adults and the larvae or you will not break the cycle.
For the adults use the new eco yellow sticky traps, you get 5 (12cm x 5cm) traps.
For the larvae nematodes are watered onto deal with the larvae underground. Parasitic nematodes seek out suitable hosts by swimming in the thin film of water on soil particles, locating hosts by detecting carbon dioxide and other waste products.
Once they find a host, they enter the body cavity through the breathing or feeding systems, and release bacteria (Xenorhabdus). The bacteria kills the host within hours, and the nematodes grow and reproduce within the 'broth', which they produce. The next generation of infective juveniles leaves the dead host, and moves in search of fresh hosts. You can read the nematode instructions HERE.
A second treatment of nematodes may be required depending on the level of infestation and the life cycle stage of the pest.

"I held off reviewing as I was scared to believe what I saw, which was in less than two weeks, my aggressive gnat infestation (we're talking 4 sticky tabs filling completely in 2 days, and yet still hundreds lining my poor indoor plants, walls and ceiling) I used half the nematode treatment (sealing the rest properly) with aims of using the other half after 2 weeks as advised for aggressive infestation. But, while I've used the other half, I didn't actually need it. I now only have 2 or three at a time, and its unnerving honestly, too good to believe! I'm so grateful to have found this site, with such excellent communication from LadyBird herself. Thank you ♡"

Was not successful for me for aphid control
"I have ordered at least 3 sets of this to try to control the aphids in my indoor plants- especially in my aloe, basil, pepper and tomato plants. I used them exactly as ordered, but none of it was successful. The pepper and tomato plants ended up dying (because of season, not because of this product), and my aloe and basil plants are still completely ridden with aphids-- to the point where the aphids have killed the basil completely. The aloe plants are still so overrun with aphids that I'm now debating whether it's even worth it to keep them because I have found no treatment to resolve this. The yellow sticky tape traps are very good. No complaints on those. But apparently the aphids I have are not responsive to the nematodes because there wasn't even a drop in their number. I will say tho that the customer service of the company has been very good and supportive, they've been really good at replies and answering questions. I have no complaints about the company itself, but the nematodes were not successful. So I think I've just been unlucky. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from this site, but I'm not convinced this product does much at all in terms of the nematodes."

"We have had an issue with fungus gnats and it was getting really noticeable and annoying. Tessa at Ladybird had been recommended and after reading the reviews we thought we would give it a go. I regret not doing it sooner! It was cheaper than I expected, it was easy to do and it worked quickly. Should fungus gnats become an issue in the future I will just head straight back to Ladybird."
