It's important to monitor when pest moths first start emerging to mate so you can start treating at the right time to give the best results.
Pheromone traps can also offer some control early in the season by disrupting the breeding cycle.
These weatherproof traps are designed to last a number of years. You can insert sticky sides and then bait the trap with a scent that is specific to your particular pest.
Insects are attracted into the inside of the trap with a specific scent (“pheromone”). You can buy pheromones for attracting different pests. The design and colour of the trap aims to avoid danger to bees and birds. It is made from recycled plastic and this makes it more weatherproof than the cardboard traps. Each trap should last several years but you need to renew the sticky floor from time to time, and the pheromones at the beginning of the season.
Pheromones are the natural "sex hormone" for insects. Generally speaking they lure the male moths into the trap because they think they can smell females. By putting out fresh pheromone in the traps at the very start of the mating season, usually Spring, you can slow down reproduction, which will mean much less caterpillars attacking your plants. Each pheromone is specific to a particular pest, and we can offer specific lures for four of the worse culprits - Citrus leaf miner, Horse Chestnut Leaf Miner, Codling moth and Plum Moth. Each pheromone lure lasts around 6 weeks.
Traps and Refills - Full season pack
We offer one sturdy delta trap with three sticky inserts and two pheromone lures. Our traps are made from recycled plastic, and are more long lasting than cardboard traps. We supply enough inserts and lures for the season, and if you need more refills you can keep the trap and just buy more refills.
When to use them
You can buy these traps in advance as the pheromones have a shelf life of at least a year
Codling Moths have a brief mating season at the beginning of the summer so you should ideally have your traps in position by the end of April, ready for action in May
Read RHS advice on the Plum Moth...
One green trap (folded flat), one wire hanger, and one set of cardboard inserts (all sealed). You should also have two pheromone vials sealed in two foil bags. One is a refill so please don’t open it yet but put it in the fridge.Instructions for use
Open the green trap so it makes a triangle. Open ONE sticky base, unfolding it so the sticky side is exposed to make a sticky floor, insert it in the green trap. Open one pheromone vial and put in the middle of the floor. Fold up both ends of trap as shown in the photo. Hang up the trap. Put the spare pheromone in the fridge and the spare sticky inserts safely away.
