Wasps are in fact beneficial insects in the garden, because they feed on plant pests.

The adult wasps feed their larvae on caterpillars and other insects which are carried back to the nest, which is generally built underground or in a dry cavity such as a roof space. (There are also solitary wasps which nest in the ground or tree holes or broken hollow stems but these are more unusual).

Wasps are only really a problem in the garden in late summer when they are go on a binge on sweet food such as fruit or jam, often getting drunk on fermenting windfalls when they can get aggressive. For most of the year, they are busy feeding their young on other insects that might otherwise cause damage to our fruit and vegetables.

If wasps are a problem when you are eating or drinking outside, then consider putting out wasp traps around the sitting area.

We supply a simple, easy to use trap. Bait with fruit juice and sugar to attract the wasps into the trap - the one way entry system ensures the is no escape!

Just hang it up in a tree in the garden and empty from time to time.
